We left Knasty Harbor in Beaufort, NC at 9:45am. The tide was running out hard diagonally pushing us against the finger dock and we needed to leave Knasty before the water got too low. We made it safely out of the dock only to run aground on the little hump behind Ghost’s slip. With some skilled maneuvering, we were on our way.
We’re working with a north wind, 5-10 knots, motoring out of Beaufort. We can hear some booming thunder far off and hope we see none of it on this trip.
At a quarter to 4pm, land sunk over the horizon and I lost all sight of the water towers and factories on the water front of Beaufort and Morehead City. For most of the day we sailed at around 2-4 knots using the spiffy new Hydrovane (a wind sensitive, self steering rudder- requires no electricity). Then we got a friendly phone call from Parker (our weather man based out of Georgetown) informing us that there will be no wind tomorrow. So Captain Runyon got to working plotting a coarse, turned on the motor and electronic auto pilot and we’re on our way! At that moment, the wind died and we pulled in the floppy sails. We’re all lounging on the deck now- letting the boat take us along our coarse. I have been drowsy with my 1/2 scopolamine patch on, I’ve taken about 5 mini naps but still managed to see an old sea turtle with huge barnacles on it’s back.
