Green Turtle Cay

June 24, 2011
Well our alternator pooped out on us after 4 hours of motoring- for whatever reason.  Brain- our mechanic from Marsh Harbor took the ferry over to Green Turtle Cay to replace it free of charge.  He had only installed our fixed one 24 hours earlier.  While he and Runyon sweated it out on the boat- Ivy, Debby and I explored the town.
We really like this place.  It's by far the nicest place we've been, our personal favorite.  Such a sweet quaint little cay.  Let me take you through town...
our first view of the town as we walk in from a little marina dingy dock where we paid for our mooring.

For sure the highlight of the day, so far- We had been sweating our butts off in the sun waiting for this little cafe to have it's grand opening.  The sign said 11 AM.  Finally opened it's doors around 11:30.  Meanwhile we got to talk to this little boy who was also waiting for the cafe to open.  That's who Debby is talking to in this picture. he was adorable- I don't know why I didn't take a picture of him.  I was so delirious from the sun and heat maybe.  He told us that this was a nice place to live (he was maybe 8-10 years old), there was absolutely no crime.  He could remember one thing being stolen, maybe.  He liked to ride his bike with the other kids.
So the little cafe finally opened and thank goodness it was air conditioned.  The family running the place was all over the place, two sisters, the mom baked and the dad kept us good company.  The whole town showed up for the grand opening!  It was all the rage.  We ordered a frappe, since they didn't have ice coffee, and all the friends and cousins, the grocery store owners and hardware guy and the ladies from the environmental center- they all showed up and crammed into this tiny little cafe with maybe 6 seats and a bar in it.  The little boy ordered a hot coffee and drank it at the bar.  So cute.

Then we left even though we were starving and the cafe served food- the way the family look over whelmed we knew we should move on.
These guys were making the freshest conch salad.  Here he is showing us how he cleans the conch
There the poor little guy is- you can see his eyes
and he cuts off the face, from under the mouth all the way up to this guy's forehead
the ledge where they keep the conch alive and fresh- they pull up a shell, clean it and collect the scraps in that bucket
Then they walk right over to their dock restaurant and make cut up the tomatoes, onions, green peppers, limes and conch
cute little boys fishing with just a string and scrap of conch across the dock

The guy in blue was listening to Black Eyed Peas while he made our salads
After lunch we went to explore the town some more...

And we found Evon- at Pineapples restaurant and bar.  She made these great pina coladas where she filled the straw with rum.  Yum.  Check out her eye make-up
And there was the most chlorinated pool ever- we stuck our feet in and our toe rings turned from silver to black instantly- we didn't venture in any further.  But the cool water felt great on that hot day
Just beyond the pool was this heavenly little spot... with a swing and a hammock

A view of New Plymouth- the town of Green Turtle Cay
 A view from the swing...
 A view from the hammock...
My toes in the sea water- so clear!
 Pineapples~

When we left from the other dock- I noticed that the entire bottom of the water was covered in old conch shells....
 Debby and Ivy conched out

While everyone slept I got to see the rainbow...

If you look closely at the rainbow- you can see both ends of the arch.  it's faint but it's there.
